It rained early this morning and was overcast when I got up. I wanted to do a boat tour of the local waterfalls, since this is my only ‘day off’ from surfing, but none were running. After bothering the surf camp owner at home (seriously), I basically stumbled on the only open travel agency and booked myself on a rainforest zipline tour since it was the only thing available and not a beach day. Did I mention my fear of heights?
I found my way to the beach where the zip line was supposed to operate. Then this preteen girl led me into the rainforest for a few minutes – neither of us able to communicate save the scrap of paper in my hand. I get harnessed and my guide Alessandro and I are off – our only common word being ‘OK’.
I think he’s entertained by my cowardness – he’s got my camera and is happily snapping away as he waits for me to cross one obstacle above the trees after the next. I’m completely freaked out by any activity that involves walking a tightrope or swinging bridge, but surprisingly [relatively] calm when it comes to actually ziplining. Holy #@#$# - I actually ziplined over the rainforest twice, and the beach once – I’m terrible at distances but suffice to say you’re flying in the air for about a minute at least each time. The views from up there were amazing – at one point Alessandro left me to get my bag , and I was standing on a platform above the trees, looking at the ocean, without a sole in sight. Pics to follow…
Spent an hour or so on the beach before heading back. Good timing – the sky opened up and it’s been raining ever since. Meeting with the surf instructor in a bit and another solo female surfer just arrived, so things are looking up despite the rain.
